Abstract

This article contributes to the study of the Peruvian party system at subnational level. We propose and discuss the findings of a measurement indicator, the Aggregated Rooting Indicator (ARI), which analyzes the party system at local and regional levels. For this end, we explore the rooting of the winning political-electoral organizations of provincial municipalities and regional governments in the period 1963-2014. Towards the last election period (2014), evidence indicates that rooting at provincial and regional level is weak but shows signs of a gradual recovery. Finally, through the ARI we evaluate the level of institutionalization of the subnational party system.
