Keywords:
Uruguay, Citizenship, DemocracyAbstract
The article discusses the meaning of democratic citizenship and maintains that the conventional vision of citizenship, abstract and genderless, reinforees the centrality of the male By denying tlle relevanee of gender, democratie theories have reinforeed the privilege ofthe male gender and linked citizenship to aetivities historically associated to that gender, relegating women to a subordinate role. The work, however, does not defend an essencialist position or a 'women's politics'~ ralher it defends the construetion of multiple forms of
comnon action within a redefinition ofpolities and citizenship closely related to concepts of identity and political community.
